Fusion Camera and dedicated cameras

By default, PhotonCam uses dedicated cameras when you select the camera lens in the camera view, which means:

  • When you select 0.5×, it will always use the Ultra Wide Camera.
  • When you select the native telephoto scale like 5× for iPhone 16 Pro, it will always use the Telephoto Camera.
  • In any other situations, it will use Wide Camera by default.

This is called using dedicated cameras, which is a different behavior than the iOS Camera app. There are pros and cons about it.

The Pros:

  • You don't have to worry about the auto-switching behavior like the iOS Camera app. For instance, sometimes using 5× in an iPhone 16 Pro will result in a cropped photo by the Wide Camera.
  • For 3rd party apps, it supports maximum photo resolutions (48MP), as well as adjusting white balance and focus distance manually.

The Cons:

  • Telephoto Camera has a minimum focus distance. If the current object you are trying to focus has less distance than the minimum focus distance, it just can't focus.
  • Automatically switching to Ultra Wide to enable Macro mode is not possible.

Thus, for compatible devices, PhotonCam introduces an option to enable Fusion Camera in the app settings. To enable it, just go to the app Settings -> Lens & Zoom.

Once the Fusion Camera is enabled, the system will choose which dedicated camera to use when zooming or focusing.

Note that you can still use dedicated Ultra Wide or Telephoto Camera when you tap the 0.5× or 5×(3×) lens buttons in the camera view.
